How Do We Measure Distance In Space

how do measure distance in space

To measure distances in the Universe,  Astronomers use different methods to determine the distances to objects. The specific method which is used depends on how far away the object is.

Various Common Measuring Methods

1) Radar
This method is use to determine distances in our solar system.

2) Parallax
This method is use to measuring distances to nearby stars. But cannot measure stars more than about 100 light-years from Earth.

3) Cepheids
Measuring distances in our Galaxy and to nearby galaxies. This method works up to 13 million light-years from the earth.

4) Supernovae
Measuring distances to other galaxies. This method works up to about 1 billion light-years.

5) Redshift and Hubble’s Law
This method is use for very far objects (beyond about 1 billion light-years)
